Swiss missionary friends serving in Siam Reap along with Swiss couple Yves and Claire visiting Cambodia came over last week to Battambang to celebrate the coming of 2016. We met at The Green Mango, a clean, welcoming restaurant owed by Cambodian Christians along ‘The Sangke’, the river that runs through Cambodia’s second largest city. Fireworks have lightened the sky almost every night.
Yves and Claire who I got to know when studying last year in Switzerland, stayed in Battambang for the whole week. We met Khmer and expatriates making a difference for God’s Kingdom here in North East Cambodia. Yesterday, Sunday we attended a vibrant Methodist Church in the morning, lunch with Ly Vanna (probably the most respected pastor in town), then over for evening worship at Lighthouse, a ministry to young people led by Swiss missionary Lukas and his wife ( Yes the Swiss are everywhere!).
PS: Battambang has been labeled the cleanest city in Cambodia. Signs along the streets (amidst hips of rubbish by the roadside and the river banks) written in Khmer and in English say: ‘Clean City Award 2015-2018’. It is the first time I see an award given 3 years ahead of time!).
Happy New Year!
